Special Session on Intelligent Vehicles and Traffic Systems

Transport systems, either aerial, terrestrial and maritime, are increasing very much with today global economy. This huge increase of  the traffic is affecting the efficiency and safety of the air  space, roads and seas. More traffic also implies more pollution and,  for the long term, environmental problems like climate change. Vehicle industry is researching in new engines and new fuels, but only a better traffic management and a more flexible and intelligent vehicles can achieve the challenges of efficiency and safety.  Intelligent vehicles inside intelligent traffic systems are the future for a sustainable grow of  developed societies.

Intelligent Vehicle research is an evolution of robotics command and control research. This evolution includes other disciplines which permit a higher level of quality in the autonomous decisions of the robot. Better automatic decision extends the tactical reaction with an strategical planning. The Intelligent Traffic System research adds information and communications technology to transport infrastructure in an effort to know and manage route loads, to improve safety and to reduce vehicle wear, transportation times, and fuel consumption. Within the intelligent technologies we account wireless communications, computational technologies, floating data, sensing technologies, inductive loop detection, video vehicle detection. Combining these technologies one can build the corresponding civil applications like electronic toll collection, emergency vehicle notification systems, congestion pricing, automatic space enforcement  and collision avoidance systems.

Research topics includes intercommunication of distributed agents (vehicles and infrastructure), artificial intelligence, knowledge data bases, real time image processing and embedded systems oriented for efficient traveling, with safety and ecology constraints.

Possible application research areas include but are not restricted to:

  • Travel planning
  • Trafic management
  • GNSS navigation
  • Environmental friendly transport
  • Sense&Avoid technologies
  • Context aware driving/piloting
  • Unmanned terrestrial/aerial/(sub)marine systems

Videos and/or demos of prototypes will be particularly welcome.
