Special Session on Legal and ethical issues

Special Session on Legal and ethical issues

Session Chair:

Vagelis Papakonstantinou, University of Patras / PKpartners Law Firm, vpapakonstantinou(at)pkpartners.gr

The session’s aim is twofold: first, to create awareness of legal and ethical issues pertaining to the implementation of Ubiquitous Computing and Intelligent Environments. Second, to address and provide solutions to immediate legal issues already raised by the to-date use of UC and IE in day-to-day life.

Ubiquitous computing and Intelligent Environments pose a series of legal and ethical issues that unavoidably follow the technical progress in the respective sectors. The processing of information that goes on besides, and largely unnoticed by, the individual challenges basic notions of the existing legal framework, such as those of personal accountability and informational self-determination.  The basics of personal data management, ownership of information, or the digital persona need to be continuously re-examined under the light of technical developments and contemporary use of UC and IE by individuals. On the other hand certain aspects of UC and IE, such as RFID, on-line gaming, and e-commerce applications in the broader sense (including, for instance, social networks), have by now gained public awareness and have thus created immediate needs for adequate legal treatment of the numerous issues that are raised by their ever-expanding use.

Research addressing any of the issues above is welcome. Possible application areas include but are not restricted to:

  • Privacy/profiling
  • Privacy/data protection/personal data management
  • Privacy/informational self-determination
  • Privacy/RFID
  • Intellectual Property/ownership of information
  • Intellectual Property/use of information
  • Intellectual Property/challenges to the traditional copyright/patents protection scheme
  • The digital persona
  • E-commerce/On-line gaming
  • E-commerce/Social networks
  • E-commerce/pervasive technologies
